ISLAMABAD: China and Russia on Monday expressed sympathies for the loss in Saturday’s Nato air strike and called for thorough investigations. In an unusually long conversation of 40 minutes, Hina Rabbani Khar spoke to Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who said: “I am ‘deeply shocked’ over the Nato cross-border air attack”.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said: “China is deeply shocked by these events, and expresses strong concern for the victims and profound condolences to Pakistan. China believes that Pakistan’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected and the incident should be thoroughly investigated and be handled properly.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavorv stressed the need for Nato to thoroughly investigate the matter. “The foreign minister briefed her Russian counterpart on the unprovoked Nato/Isaf attack on Pakistani territory and decisions taken by the Defence Committee of the Cabinet,” the Foreign Office spokesperson said in a statement. Khar said besides being a gross violation of established international norms, such attacks posed a threat to regional peace and stability as well.

The Russian foreign minister expressed sympathy for the loss of lives, as well as complete understanding of Pakistan’s position. He underscored that Pakistan and Russia were partners in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and also partners in promoting regional cooperation.

PPI adds: Iran’s Islamic Revolution’s Guards Corps (IRGC) Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari on Monday strongly condemned the air raids of US and Nato forcers, Iranian Irna news agency reported.

In a message to COAS General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, he expressed condolence over the incident. “There is no doubt that the horrible crime was in violation international laws and regulations which once again unmasked the true face of the so-called advocates of peace and human rights,” he said. He condoled with Pakistan Army and nation for atrocities of Nato and US forces.

Online adds: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the recent Nato airstrike. OIC Secretary General Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the government of Pakistan.

The OIC SG said the attacks were indeed serious violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and were totally unacceptable. He assured Pakistan of solidarity and expressed his expectation for the prevention of any recurrence of such incidents. He urged Nato to avoid any action that could further complicate the already dire security situation in the region.
