85pc of Mohmand Agency cleared: corps commander

PESHAWAR: Corps Commander Peshawar Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik has said that most of Mohmand Agency had been cleared of militants and terrorists after the successful military operation restored the writ of the government there.
Talking to journalists at Mamadgat in Mohmand Agency, he said, the army had reclaimed 80 to 85 percent area of Mohmand Agency after the successful military operation Brekhna (lightning) in which 72 soldiers, including three officers, embraced martyrdom and around 150 other soldiers were injured.
The corps commander said that the major action in Mohmand Agency had been completed and now only search and cordon operation was being carried out in a few pockets.
Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik said the back of the militants and terrorists had been broken in Mohmand Agency and the writ of government re-established. He said the internally displaced persons (IDPs) belonging to Mohmand Agency had returned to their areas and were living safely in their hometowns.
A large number of IDPs belonging to the tribal region have returned to their houses and the rest will come back soon, he said, adding the repatriation of the IDPs of Sooran Dara would start in the coming days.
About the rehabilitation efforts being made, the corps commander said development work had already started in the secured areas and the damaged infrastructure would be rebuilt on scientific lines.
Earlier, Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik was received by Inspector General Frontier Corps, Maj Gen Nadir Zaib on arrival in Mohmand Agency and was briefed about the overall security situation and operational preparedness.
The corps commander spent Eid with troops in Mohmand and Bajaur agencies and greeted them on this auspicious occasion. He also visited different locations and appreciated the high morale of troops. He said the nation held the sacrifices of the soldiers in high esteem. The troops on this occasion said they would sacrifice everything for protection and defence of the motherland.
