PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority on Tuesday discarded 2,000 kilogram of expired food items here.

Attaullah Khan, a spokesperson for the authority said, the expired and banned items were discarded by following the standard operating procedure (SOP).

Giving details about disposal of the expired items, the official added that items had been seized in various operations.

Attaullah added the discarded items included expired cold drinks, unhygienic sweets, used oil and low-quality chips.

The official maintained that the items were discarded at the designated point of disposal of Water Supply and Sanitation Peshawar (WSSP) on the Kohat Road.

He said the food safety officers along with other technical staff were present to ensure proper disposal of the items.

“It was a challenge for government departments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to dispose of the expired items,” the official remarked.

He maintained all divisional offices followed the standard operating procedure to minimise environmental hazards.

The spokesperson maintained the authority strictly prohibited not to throw the discarded items into water channels. He added that expired items caused carcinogenic effects and contaminated water.
