ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has decided to recognize newly created state of South Sudan that has been carved out of United Sudan through a referendum. Saudi Arabia has also formally recognised the 193th state of the world.
Well-placed diplomatic sources told The News here Wednesday that Pakistan has consulted its traditional friends in the region and has decided to accord recognition to the new state. The Foreign Office has formally initiated the summary for the recognition and it is expected that the announcement would come soon after the return of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani from London Friday next.
The government will convey to the administration of newly created state its readiness to establish full diplomatic relations with the new republic and it will wish the new country all success in fulfilling its role as a member of the international community.
Pakistan expects that the relations between Sudan and South Sudan would be marked with mutual friendship and respect promoting stability and security in the region. Pakistan is appreciative of Qatar for its successful efforts to make Sudan’s authorities and Darfur’s Liberation and Justice Movement sign a peace agreement.
The sources said that Pakistan would set up a diplomatic mission in the new state’s capital but for the time being it is likely that Pakistan’s mission in Egypt and ambassador Ms. Seema Naqvi will look after the new capital.
