Columnist and writer Manoj Kumar has written two story books for children titled Mogo Mattar Ain Soni Kukur (The Dumb Fellow and Golden Hen) and Burf Shahzadi (Snow Princess). Both books are in Sindhi language, aiming to help create reading habit among the new generation. These beautifully printed books are published by the Sindhi Language Authority (SLA).
The stories in these books are actually translation and adaptation of famous fairy tales like Snow White, Golden Goose, Hansel, Gratel etc. Manoj Kumar has adapted the stories in a way that these stories seem original Sindhi Folk stories.
The writer, in the preface, mentions two aims of these books. One is to draw young readers to the fascinating world of books. This will install reading habits among children which will consequently lead to positive and creative tendencies. The second aim of these books is to make children familiar with the Sindhi language. The writer opined that children, especially in the big cities, are fast becoming unfamiliar with Sindhi words. The writer has consciously taken the effort to introduce the beauty of Sindhi language to young readers. He has also explained difficult words and phrases at the end of each story to increase the vocabulary of children. The books are made more attractive with illustrations by Harji Lal.
The SLA has taken an initiative to produce inspiring books for children. Earlier, Mirza Qaleech Baig had produced such valuable books for children, which now are no more available in the market. Decreasing reading habit and lack of understanding of the Sindhi language has caused fear among the saner elements in Sindh. Especially in urban centres the children of several families belonging to the Sindhi society cannot read and speak the language.
In this regard, educationists have already recommended to the government that the curriculum should be changed as per the changing scenario. These books might help children in improving their vocabulary.
