Dr. Assad Hafeez becomes new DG Health

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Saturday appointed Dr. Assad Hafeez, as Director General Health in the Ministry of Health.
With a Masters in Epidemiology and Health Systems from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD in public health from Manchester University, United Kingdom, Dr. Assad is one of the most qualified public health specialists in Pakistan.
He is currently the executive director and dean of the Health Services Academy, in addition to being the head of the Academy’s MNCH department. Trained as a paediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Assad got heavily involved in research, public health and policy planning at the highest level. He has worked in leadership positions in various programmes and projects such as the Lady Health Workers’ Programme and has also served as chief of Health System Strengthening and Policy Unit in the Ministry of Health. He has contributed to the development of important policy documents and provided advice in the development of the National Health Policy 2010.
Dr. Asad is a prominent academic and researcher in child health, health policy, health systems strengthening and public health, the last two being his key areas of interest. He has held various academic posts in national and international institutions and has extensive experience of working in international organizations such as WHO, Unicef, UNDP and others.
Dr. Assad has been regularly providing technical support and policy advice to ministries and international organizations. He also has extensive management, monitoring and evaluation experience as well.
The new DG Health is affiliated with international universities in various academic and research capacities. He has been involved in various research projects in an institutional as well as individual capacity. He is on the board of editors of reputed journals and has to his credit, more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has also contributed to a

number of books and monographs in the field of paediatrics and public health in addition to various papers as invited and plenary speaker in national and international forums.
Dr. Assad’s appointment to the post is being welcomed by public health circles in Pakistan as it is after a long time that a professional who is qualified in the field of public health has been appointed as DG Health.
