Major reshuffle in FO, missions on the cards

ISLAMABAD: A major reshuffle in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Pakistani missions abroad is on the cards, official sources said here on Tuesday.

According to an official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the process of appointing new ambassadors and high commissioners to France, Syria, Denmark, Oman, Jordan, Canada and Switzerland has already begun.

“As the Pakistani envoys to France, Oman Jordan, etc, are shortly going to complete their tenures, their requests for extension have been rejected,” he said.

Musa Javed Chohan will be Pakistan’s new high commissioner to Canada. He is currently Director-General of the Foreign Service Academy, Islamabad, and has served as Pakistan’s ambassador to France and earlier as high commissioner to Malaysia. He is replacing Shahid Malik, who has already been appointed Pakistan’s high commissioner in India.

“Shahid Malik will reach Islamabad next month to meet the president, the prime minister, the foreign minister and heads of concerned departments to receive special briefing regarding his new assignment,” the sources added.

Fauzia Nasreen, Additional Secretary in the Foreign Office, may be posted as Director-General of the Foreign Service Academy.

Pakistan’s consul-general in its New York mission, Haroon Shaukat, has been designated to become Ambassador to Brazil vice Khalid Khan Khattak, who has returned to the headquarters and appointed Additional Foreign Secretary. Haroon Shaukat’s agreema has been sought from the Brazilian government.

Mohsin Razi, currently Director-General Disarmament Cell of the Foreign Office, will be proceeding as Pakistan's consul-general in New York.

Pakistan's ambassador to France Anees-ud-din Ahmad and ambassador in the Russian Federation Mustfa Kemal Qazi are attaining superannuation next month. The prime minister would decide about extension in their service during the current month since both the envoys have sought extension in service on contract basis. Qazi is the senior most officer of the Foreign Service who is in grade-22 and is expected to get a two-year extension.

But other sources said Director-General India and South Asia Desk in the Foreign Ministry Jalil Abbas Jilani, Additional Secretary at the PM Secretariat Zameer Akram and Additional Foreign Secretary Shahid Kamal are being considered for appointment as envoy to France

Pakistan’s former ambassador to Afghanistan Prince Akbar Zaib Khan has been appointed Director-General Desk on the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

Ambassador to Syria Moiz Bukhari would return to Islamabad next month after completing his tenure, and the government has decided to appoint him as Additional Foreign Secretary, the sources said.

"Ambassador to Jordan Arif Kamal will retire in December while Ambassador to Oman Javed Hafeez will complete his tenure in December. Panels are being named to select their replacement,” the sources said.

The sources said the present high commissioner to Switzerland, Fauzia Abbas, would be shortly posted as High Commissioner to Denmark, and Ayesha Riaz, who is currently Deputy Head of the mission in Paris, would be named as envoy to Switzerland.
