Abadgar Board calls for hike in cane price
November 10, 2010
HYDERABAD: Sindh Abadgar Board (SAB) has demanded that sugarcane procurement rate be fixed at Rs127 per 40 kilogram.
A meeting of the board presided by its president, Abdul Majeed Nizamani, said the sugar price hike was the result of inefficient planning.
The participants of the meeting expressed concern over the fact that for more than three months, the position of Cane Commissioner had been lying vacant.
They said the crushing season should have started one month earlier instead of November 1. They demanded that sugar mills increase cane procurement rate to Rs127 per 40 kg since they were selling sugar at Rs80 per kg.
A report presented on the occasion recommended free provision of seeds, fertiliser and medicines to growers in the flood-ravaged areas in order to prevent agriculture from suffering more losses.
The meeting also demanded reduction in the price of petroleum products and swift reconstruction of damaged irrigation infrastructure in the province.
