European Union (EU) Ambassador, Kurt Juul said Pakistan could attract substantial foreign investment from EU member states if it resolves issues pertaining to foreign investors. Juul, flanked by French Ambassador Yannick Gerard, was addressing a news conference here on Tuesday. He said investment conditions were satisfactory but issues such as with Hubco should have been resolved to attract investors’ confidence.
To another question, Gerard said that no economic sanctions were imposed by the EU on Pakistan. Juul further said EU is keen to support investment and ventures of EU member states’ companies but said such ventures and investment must be made on business to business basis as the EU itself would not play the role of a broker.
“If there will be any business to business cooperation between Pakistan and EU business community, EU will assist such projects through its fund,” Juul said, adding the fund would give seed money for such ventures.
Juul urged Pakistani businessmen to visit Europe and attract their counterparts to make investments in their country. “Only the efforts of the European business community will not help the cause.” During the two-day stay, the EU team met central bank high-ups, members of cabinet of Sindh government and governor Sindh.
To a query, he said the team had also discussed law and order situation with the governor. But he avoided a direct answer about the seriousness of the situation.
However, both Gerard and Juul expressed disappointment over the decline of Pakistan’s imports from European countries though it’s exports to EU were surging.
