Flood affectees get cash, quilts

PESHAWAR: The Kheshgi Foundation, a social welfare organisation, distributed quilts and cash among the flood-stricken residents of a village in Nowshera district on Saturday. Donated by a philanthropist family of Islamabad, the machine-made quilts were given to the needy and deserving people of Kheshgi village at their doorstep by the volunteers of the Kheshgi Foundation. On the directives of the foundation’s chairman Pir Darwesh Kheshgi, over 100 families were given the quilts and cash ahead of winter. Kheshgi, having population of over 50,000 was one of the worst affected villages in Nowshera. The flood destroyed over 200 houses completely in the village while some 300 were damaged partially. Precious household items including quilts and beds were damaged by the floodwaters.

Five militants killed in Swat

MINGORA: The security forces on Saturday killed five militants and recovered weapons from their possession during a clash at Totano Bandai checkpost in Kabal tehsil of Swat, official sources said. The militants were entering Swat from Dir district. “All five militants were killed,” the sources said, adding that the forces also recovered 10 hand-grenades, five Kalashnikov rifles and scores of cartridges.

Choppers shell militant hideouts

BARA: Military gunship helicopters pounded hideouts of militants in Lakar Baba and Ghaibi Neka areas of Bara tehsil in Khyber Agency, local sources said on Saturday. The sources said that three gunship helicopters shelled the suspected positions of banned Lashkar-e-Islam. Three hideouts of militants were destroyed in the attack. Meanwhile, the forces carried out a search operation in Chaghidagari and Bazgarah areas and arrested three suspects.

Road closed

MANSEHRA: Balakot-Naran Road was closed for traffic on Saturday after a man was killed due to landsliding in the Malkundi area. Abdul Rehman was killed and two other persons sustained critical injuries when a landslide hit the road and blocked it again. The road was opened for traffic few days ago.

Govt asked to compensate, rehabilitate IDPs

SWABI: Speakers at a seminar here Saturday asked the government to accelerate rehabilitation process of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the tribal regions. Organised by the Amn Tehrik, the seminar titled ‘Conflict Sensitive Rehabilitation’ was attended by people from different walks of life. Addressing the seminar, Idrees Kamal, convener of the Amn Tehrik, said that they have been striving for restoration of peace in the province. However, he said the Pakhtuns had been bearing the brunt of so-called war on terror for many years and there was none to mitigate their sufferings.

Man shot dead in Dera

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A man was shot dead and another sustained injuries in a firing incident in Panyala tehsil bazaar Saturday, police said. The sources said two gunmen entered a shop in Ghalla Mandi in Panyala bazaar and opened fire on the inmates of the shop. One Mumtaz, son of Abbas, was killed on the spot while Abdul Kareem, son of Ghulam Qadir, sustained injuries.

Talking to reporters after the meeting of the association, bar’s president Shahjahan Khan Swati said the lawyers would extend full support to Justice Ejaz Afzal in his efforts to improve the image of lower judiciary. He also briefed the media about the decisions of the bar meeting and said lawyers’ sacrifices for an independent judiciary would not go waste. PESHAWAR: A security post near Hayatabad town was attacked by unidentified people early Saturday. Though no casualty or damage was reported, a few bullets hit the picket. Police said that a cross firing between two rival groups took palce.

Moot demands Darul Qaza for Timergara

CHITRAL: Demanding prompt implementation of Nizam-e-Adl Regulation in Malakand division, an All Parties Conference held here Saturday asked the authorities to establish Darul Qaza in Timergara or Chakdarra to facilitate the people of Chitral. Besides lawyers, local leaders of all the political parties and members of the civil society attended the moot. The participants demanded that camp court of the additional commissioner, Malakand division should be set up in Chitral so that petitioners could file complaints against the verdict of district officer revenue in cases pertaining to forests and other property cases. They said that a camp office of service tribunal should also be established in Chitral to facilitate government officials to pursue their cases pertaining to appointments, transfers and promotions.

Anti-polio drive in Swat from tomorrow

MINGORA: A three-day anti-polio drive would be launched in parts of Swat district from tomorrow. Speaking at a press conference, National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF) officials Mian Nisar Bacha and Afreen said that around 918 teams had been formed to administer oral drops to children during the campaign starting from October 11. Urging the parents to get their children immunized against the crippling disease, the officials said that 861 mobile teams would perform duties to administer drops to children at schools, bus stops and public places. They asked the religious scholars to help remove misconceptions among the people about polio.

No arrest made in NGO worker’s killing case

CHARSADDA: Police Friday failed to arrest the man accused of killing a worker of a non-governmental organisation a day earlier. The sources said Aftab Khan, who was working for the Lohari Humanitarian Organisation was shot dead during distribution of relief items on Thursday. The sources said Aftab Khan was distributing tokens of food items among the flood affectees in Baila Koroona when one Afsar Ali exchanged harsh words with him and then shot him dead. Two minors also sustained injuries in the attack.

Cricketers visit flood affectees in Nowshera

NOWSHERA: British fast bowler Sajid Mehmood and former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mehmood visited the flood affectees in Pashtun Garhi Ajab Bagh area here Saturday. Talking to reporters, Sajid Mehmood said that an exhibition cricket match would be organised to raise funds for the flood-stricken people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sajid Mehmood said funds were being collected in Britain to provide relief to the affectees.

AJK minister disqualified over fake degree
MUZAFFARABAD: Member Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Chaudhry Rukhsar Ahmed was disqualified on Saturday for having a fake degree. The District and Session Judge disqualified the Industries and Livestock minister on an application moved by his opponent candidate Chaudhry Arshad. The court observed that the matriculation degree of Rukhsar was faked and asked the Election Commission to hold by-election on the constituency. People’s Muslim League leader Chaudhry Arshad had previously challenged the degree of Ch Rukhsar in the Election Commission, which had dismissed his petition. However, Arshad later moved the District and Session Judge over the matter, who decided in his favour.

Demo against substandard fertilisers

BUREWALA: Farmers staged a demonstration against substandard fertilizers here on Saturday. They gave a four-day deadline to the government for taking action against fertilizer companies otherwise they would intensify their protest. They also announced a demonstration on Wednesday. Farmers including Muhammad Ashiq, Muhammad Aslam, Ch Ihsan Ullah, Mirza Nasir Riaz, Iqbal Zahoor Kahloon, Shakeel Ahmad, Muhammad Hanif, Muhammad Amin Warraich and others in a press conference said different fertilizer companies were selling substandard fertilizers, adding a laboratory confirmed that DAP, SSP, SOP and MOP supplied in the market were standard and below the benchmark. They condemned sale of such fertilisers and feared it would affect cultivation of potatoes, wheat and canola crops. They said Punjab Soil and Water Testing Laboratory for Research, Lahore revealed that most of the fertilizers were substandard.
