The Karachi Coordination Committee of Pakistan People’s Party on Sunday paid glowing tributes to their late comrade, Afaq Khan Shahid, in a special reference held to commemorate his services.
The committee was in full attendance as the members recounted their experiences with the departed leader and his services to the party.
Late Afaq Khan Shahid, they said, had left behind a legacy of selfless service to the party and to the people that ought to be carried forward by the party cadre and leadership.
The mammoth crowd that had turned up at his burial was a testimony to the services that Afaq Khan Shahid had rendered for the people.
The KCC members recounted how the polite and ever-smiling Afaq Khan Shahid had shown time and again exemplary courage and dedication in defending the rights of the oppressed.
Having started his political career in the then East
Pakistan with Maulana Bhashani, Pakistan People’s Party was a natural choice for him when he migrated to Karachi after the creation of Bangladesh.
He went to jail several times while bravely serving the party.
Afaq Khan Shahid had enjoyed the complete trust of Late Benazir Bhutto.
He was twice elected to the National Assembly.
He was made a federal minister by Benazir Bhutto and was given the most intricate task of negotiating with the MQM on behalf of the then federal government during Benazir’s second tenure as prime minister.
He was later made the chairman of a committee to review the cases against MQM workers and in that capacity he got hundreds of MQM workers released.
