The inauguration of the first phase of the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI) in Lahore is another milestone achieved by the Punjab government. Once completed, the PKLI will enjoy the status of being the first state-of-the-art project and one of the largest transplant centres in the world. Additionally, the institute will provide free and affordable healthcare facilities to all Pakistanis. The chief minister of the province has rightly said that the institute is a gift to this nation on the auspicious occasion of the birthday of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Since Pakistan is a country where almost 1.2 million people are in need of a liver transplant, an institution like the PKLI is the need of the hour.
Quality healthcare is a fundamental right of every citizen of this country. No one can be deprived of medical treatment just because he or she is unable to pay the cost. Nothing is more precious than a human life and the Punjab government acknowledges this fact. The work it has done in the form of the PKLI to mitigate the suffering of the poor and is remarkable.
