ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Jehangir Khan Tareen and Salman Shahbaz, son of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Tuesday exchanged barbs on the issue of purchase of sugarcane from farmers on less than the government approved rates.

Tareen alleged in a tweet that the Sharif family’s sugar mill was buying sugarcane from farmers on less than the government approved rate. “Ramzan Sugar Mills, owned directly by Shohbaz Sharif, (is) paying farmers Rs150, instead of Rs180 (per 40kg), and under-weighing by 15/20%.

“All Sharif family mills (were) openly breaking the law and entire Punjab admin (officials) have (buried) their heads in the sand... Shame on you SS (Shahbaz Sharif) for stealing (money) of farmers”.

In reply, Salman Shahbaz termed Jehangir Tareen “a known sugar don, who has stashed money abroad”, according to a Geo News report.

Salman alleged that instead of the government fixed price, Tareen was paying only Rs120 (per 40kg) with 20 per cent deduction on weight to sugarcane growers. The Sharif family scion also alleged that “Tareen holds Swiss accounts”.
