Hearing in Sepa cases stalled

Statements of witnesses against a polluting sugar mill in Nawabshah could not be recorded and charges could not be framed against another polluting factory in Jamshoro, by the Sindh Environmental Protection Tribunal on Tuesday as its Chairperson, Ashraf Jahan is on leave.
Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) has filed complaints against Habib Sugar Mills Nawabshah and Fibre Tex, a factory located at Kotri Industrial Area Jamshoro under sections 11 and 16 of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act (Pepa) 1997 for creating environmental pollution.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Habib Sugar Mills, Raees-ul-Hasan along with his lawyer was present before the tribunal while two witnesses of prosecution were also present. However, owing to the absence of the chairperson, the proceedings could not be held. Member (legal) of the environmental tribunal, Abdul Karim Memon who was presiding over the tribunal’s proceedings, adjourned the hearing of the case till October 13 with the directions that all the witnesses of prosecution must be present before the tribunal on the next hearing.
In another case, charges against Fibre Tex, a chipboard manufacturing factory located in Kotri Industrial Area, Jamshoro could not be framed owing to the same reason. CEO Fibre Tex, Najmuddin, along with his attorney was present before the tribunal. Memon adjourned the hearing of the case till October 20.
