Angry flood victims loot food centre in Nowshera

NOWSHERA: The flood victims allegedly broke into the store of the Society for Skills and Trainings Development (SSTD) and took away relief items on Tuesday.
Hundreds of the flood victims belonging to Pir Sabak, Hakimabad and Cantonment Area, who had been without food for days, looted food items and 1,600 bags of flour. The angry flood victims also blocked the Badrashi and Ziarat Kaka Sahib Road for an hour in protest. They also chanted slogans against the management of the NGO.
Talking to reporters, the flood victims said that representative of the SSTD, Mian Nasir Ali Shah, had issued them tokens last week after collecting their computerised national identity cards but despite that they would visit daily to the store where the officials of the organisation used to humiliate them.
Wife of one Syed Tariq Shah Bukhari told the media that she was a cancer patient and had been coming to the office of the organisation for last several days to get food items but to no avail. She complained that the government did not give anything to the flood victims despite tall claims.
Meanwhile, the police fired shots into the air when the flood victims were taking away the items and several women and children sustained injuries. Assistant Coordination Officer (ACO) Abdul Hameed Khan constituted an investigation team to probe the incident.
When contacted, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Ali Anan Qamar expressed his surprise over the incident, saying that how 1,600 bags were left out of the 6,000 provided to the NGO for the affected people.
The representative of the SSTD, Mian Nasir Ali Shah told the media that the contract of providing food items including flour, ghee and biscuits to the flood victims had been granted to his organisation.
District Police Officer (DPO) Nisar Tanoli said legal action would be taken against the officials of the SSTD for not distributing the food items fairly among the flood victims.
Meanwhile, the officials of an intelligence agency also conducted a raid on a house in Badrashi area and seized 70 bags of flour and medicines. Five persons allegedly involved in storing the food items were also arrested. Sources said the accused told the officials that they had been running the business of buying food items from the affected people.
