USAID-funded Peshawar beautification project launched

PESHAWAR: The NWFP government Friday launched a mega project for the infrastructural development of the provincial metropolis including beautification and renovation of parks and gardens.

The Peshawar Urban Improvement Development Programme project will be carried out with the financial support of the USAID, a non-governmental organisation. The organisation will provide $15 million for the project.

The NWFP senior minister, Bashir Bilour formally inaugurated the project at Shahi Bagh. Architect Mahfooz Mirza, while briefing the senior minister, said that like Baradari of Shalimar Garden Lahore, will be constructed in Shahi Bagh on 45 kanals of land with fountains and waterfalls. The area would have seating capacity of 1,200 people.

He said that on the entire 604 kanals land of Shahi Bagh orchards as well as gardens with different kinds of flowers would be laid for which separate tube-wells would be dug. Besides renovating the mosque in Shahi Bagh, a separate park for women and children will also be constructed.

Bashir Bilour also put forward suggestions about the beautification of various parks of the city, which were considered by the USAID representatives. The senior minister announced that from the development fund of the ANP women members of the provincial assembly, National Assembly and Senate, the provincial government would provide fire brigade engines to each district, tehsil and town of the province.

District Nazim Muhammad Omar Khan, Commissioner Peshawar Arbab Shah Rukh, district coordination officer (DCO) Sahibzada Anees, secretary for local government Hifzur Rahman and officials of the Town I and Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) were also present on the occasion.
