Mian Tufail passes away

LAHORE: Renowned religious scholar and second Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Mian Tufail Muhammad passed away here on Thursday evening. He was 96.

His Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered at 4pm on Friday (tomorrow). Born in Kapurthala in Indian Punjab in 1913, Tufail Muhammad was one of the close lieutenants of Syed Abul Aala Maudoodi, the founding Ameer of the Jamaat.

Mian Tufail, who suffered brain haemorrhage about one month ago, remained in coma till his last breath. He left four sons and eight daughters behind him. Mian Tufail Muhammad obtained his graduation (BA Hons) in Physics and Mathematics from Government College, Lahore in 1935 and did his LLB from the Punjab University Law College in 1937. Tufail Muhammad was one of the closest fellows of Syed Abul Aala Maudoodi and Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi and also one of the founder members of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Mian Tufail Muhammad was one of 75 founding members of JI when it was formed in 1941. He was appointed as the first Secretary General (Qayyim) of the party during the first All India JI Conference in 1944. After that he moved to Pathankot.

Tufail worked as JI Secretary General till 1965 and was elected Ameer of the JI West Pakistan in January 1966 to 1972. After the resignation of Sayed Maudoodi as Ameer in October 1972, Mian Tufail was elected as Ameer for five years and was again elected for two more terms till 1987 when Qazi Husain Ahmad was elected the JI Chief.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed deep grief and sorrow over the demise of Mian Tufail. Senate Deputy Chairman Mir Jan Muhammad Jamali, Leader of the House in the Senate Nayyar Husain Bukhari, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Wasim Sajjad, Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Iqbal, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, ANP President Asfandyar Wali Khan, NWFP Chief Minister Haider Khan Hoti, MQM chief Altaf Hussain and PTI Chairman Imran Khan also expressed sorrow over Mian Tufail’s demise.
