NCSW ‘to help find solutions to women problems’

National Assembly Speaker Dr. Fehmida Mirza Wednesday said that National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) would be activated through legislation in the Parliament.

“It should play proactive role in finding solutions to problems confronting women in the country,” she said this while chairing a meeting of the Working Council of Women’s Parliamentarian Caucus held to review working of the NCSW.

She said that women empowerment was essential for development and progress of the country and it was high time to ensure equal opportunities to women in social, political and economic spheres of life.

The speaker said that the present democratic set up was determined to make effective and comprehensive legislation to protect the women rights. She said that women parliamentarians were actively participating in public affairs and legislative work.

She said that NCSW was an important body that was helpful in pointing out women related problems and proposing their solution. Earlier, NCSW Chairperson Anisa Haroon briefed the meeting about the formation, functions and future plans for improvement of the commission. She said that there was a need of coordination between the federal government and provinces.

She proposed that the NCSW should be permanent and autonomous for making it more effective body. Shehnaz Wazir Ali, advisor to the prime minister also briefed the meeting about the role of the commission. She said that commission’s role should be independent and advocating the cause of women empowerment. She said that its role was distinctively clear from the government body or ministry.

MNA Nafisa Shah supported the idea of autonomous commission with representation from all provinces. She said that women Parliamentarian unanimously support independent and autonomous commission with adequate budgeting and staffing.

The meeting was attended by MNAs Nafisa Shah, Azra Fazal Pechuho, Asiya Nasir, Bushra Gohar, Khush Bakht Shujaat, Begum Nuzhat Sadiq, Reena Kumari, Saima Akhtar Bharwana, Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Farahnaz Ispahani, Shakeela Khanam Rasheed, Dr. Zil-e-Huma, Dr. Attiya Inayatullah, senators Sughra Imam and Begum Najma Hameed.
