The only blind PhD in Pakistan

KARACHI: Strong determination and a deep sense of purpose often pave way to the resounding success even in case of many hurdles, including physical disabilities.

This has been proved by Dr Abdullah Qadri, Associate Professor and Chairman-designate of the Department of Political Science, who is blind since he was two months old. The physical abnormality, according to him, never became a barrier between him and success.

Dr. Qadri was a bit philosophical while talking to this scribe at his office on Saturday. “Blindness is not the inability to see from your eyes. Blindness creeps in when somebody loses his insight,” he uttered the words sagely.

Dr. Qadri is the only blind PhD in Pakistan and according to his colleagues it has been authenticated. He did his PhD on the “Political Theory of Imam Abu Haneefah” in 1989. It is worth mentioning that Dr. Qadri never used the “Braille” meant for the blind. He always used recorded text for listening, memorising then narrating it to the “writer” who jots down his words on the examination sheets. He had special praise for his brother, Dr. Qadri, who is also an Associate Professor in the same department and his wife, a postgraduate, who helped him pursue his academic goals by reading for him the course work.

On a query about the behaviour of his department employees, he said their attitude was quite normal with him. “The tongue is more instrumental in making friends and dealing with different kinds of people,” he said which dilated his acute observing power. Dr. Qadri possesses immaculate educational record - passing all the examinations from SSC to MA in first class, except HSC that landed him a

second class.
