PIA remain on top of Group A in spite of dull draw
January 30, 2009
KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) retained their top position in Group A with 30 points from six matches, even though their sixth-round, four-day match of the 2008-09 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Cricket Championship, sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), against Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) ended in a tame draw at the Jinnah Stadium Sialkot on Thursday.
Bad weather had prompted no play at all on the first two days of the encounter. On the remaining two days, just 79 overs play was possible and not even one innings could be completed. The PIA team never went in to bat.
PIA, however, with three wins and a loss from their six matches, which gave them 30 points, stayed ahead of National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and Habib Bank Limited (HBL) in the 11-team ranking, with these two teams having attained an identical 27 points.
Yesterday, WAPDA extended their overnight 89 for two in 23 overs to an eventual 274 for seven when the match was called off. Opener Adil Nisar added only one more to his score, his 45 runs coming off 75 balls in two minutes short of two hours with seven fours.
Ali Azmat, with 52 not out off 107 balls with six fours and a six, with Imranullah Aslam later helped add 72 runs for the seventh wicket. Imranullah’s exact 50 took just 68 deliveries to make in 64 minutes with seven fours and a six.
Habib Bank took their points tally to 27 as they defeated Lahore Shalimar in their sixth-round match at Gaddafi Stadium by six wickets on Thursday. Having required only 105 runs to win, Habib Bank made 108 for four yesterday and coasted to an easy victory.
With two wickets lost at the same score of 29, national captain Younis Khan’s team prospered through a 75 runs third-wicket partnership. Farhan Iqbal made 37 off 55 balls with seven fours while Sajid Shah hit 38 off 47 balls with eight fours in a shuffled batting order.
Defending champions Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) raced to their second successive victory when they defeated Pakistan Customs by 177 runs at Jinnah Stadium Gujranwala yesterday.
They declared their second innings closed at the overnight 224 for eight, as they already enjoyed an advantage of 280 runs, and bowled out Customs for a pathetic score of 103 runs to gain an emphatic win.
Their new-ball attack of Samiullah Niazi and Imran Ali bowled unchanged as either bowler took five wickets, at a personal cost of 46 and 56 runs, respectively. The left-armed Samiullah had a match analysis of nine wickets for 107 runs while Imran took nine for 93.
None of the Customs batsmen went beyond 24 runs and this score came from number nine Mohammad Zahid. Left-handed all-rounder Mohammad Hussain had earlier made 23. Customs lost their first six wickets with only 37 runs on the board.
Having set Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) a rather steep target of 342 runs to win, Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) had their opponents bowled out for 210 runs in their second innings at the KRL Stadium Rawalpindi on Thursday, thus winning by the convincing margin of 131 runs.
Left-arm medium-fast Junaid Khan captured four wickets for 40 runs in 18 overs with pacemen Sohail Tanvir (2-68) and Jaffer Nazir (2-27) picking up two each. Right-arm medium-fast Yasir Arafat, who had a career-best haul of 9-35 in the first innings, was given just eight overs to bowl in the second and had a return of 1-5 with four maidens.
For SSGC, Wajid Ali (69 off 235 balls in a little over four and three-quarter hours with three fours) and wicket-keeper Ahmed Zeeshan (43 off 81 balls with seven fours) added 75 runs for the fifth wicket, but the last five wickets added just a further 45 runs.
On Wednesday, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) had beaten Karachi Whites by a narrow two-wicket margin, here at the National Stadium Karachi, inside three days of their Group A match.
The seventh round matches in the tournament will get under way at various centres around the country from Sunday, February 1.
