Lahore ‘cultural capital of Muslim World’

A THREE-DAY national seminar on Digitising, Developing and Facilitating Access to the Sources of Islamic Heritage, being held in connection with the celebrations of Lahore, chosen by the Islamic Scientific Cultural Organisation (ISCO) as the cultural capital of the Muslim world along with other three major cities for the year 2008, was inaugurated at a hotel here on Monday.

Dr Shaista Nuzhat, the director of the Punjab Institute of Languages, Art and Culture, told that the conference was organised by the Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO, Islamabad, in connection with the year long celebrations. Orya Maqbool Jan, the secretary Information, Culture and Youth Affairs inaugurated the conference.

The delegates of the conference, including four eminent scholars from Iran, were presented a welcome address by Saqib Aleem, the secretary general, of national commission for UNESCO.

Dr Abbas Sadri, director ISESCO regional office, Tehran, also delivered a speech on the occasion. While renowned scholars read their papers on various issue regarding cultural diversity, which included Digitisation on the Lahore Heritage City by Prof Dr Khalid W Bajwa, associate professor at the School of Architecture, Beaconhouse National University (BNU). An introduction of Digitising, Developing and Facilitating Access to the Sources of Islamic Heritage was presented by Dr Ahmad Pakatchi Shotorbannejad.

A paper on ‘Documentation and Digitisation of Vernacular Architecture in Northern Areas of Pakistan’ by Salman Muhammad, the project architect, AKCSP, and ‘Digitisation of the Marble Floor of Sultan Hassan Madressah in Cairo’ was read by Prof Dr Gulzar Hyder, dean of the School of Architecture, BNU.

A panel discussion was also held at the end of the first day of the conference. Later, in the evening, a Punjabi Play ‘Gal Nikki Jai’ directed by Tipu Sultan and a musical show of renowned popular and classical singers Hussain Baksh Gulloo, Humera Arshad, M Jawaad, Malkoo, Kiran from Cholistan and Jassi Lyallpuria was held in the auditorium of the Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture, Alhamra Cultural Complex, Ferozepur Road.
