Abid Boxer’s uncle dies in police custody

AN accused in several murder and property grabbing cases, Zafar Abbas, maternal uncle of ex-police inspector Abid Boxer, died in police custody in Services Hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Zafar Abbas, a resident of DHA, Lahore, was also accused of murdering a director of a cooperative bank. His family claimed police arrested him in connection with a kidnapping-cum-murder of Naseem Sharif, widow of a retired brigadier. He was accused of fraudulently getting the property of the widow transferred in his name. A case (658/07) against him and his son was registered in Qila Gujar Singh police station on July 11, 2007. His family claimed that police arrested Zafar Abbas and his son Nadim Abbas almost 14 days back and put their arrest on record on July 19, 2008. Batool Bibi, wife of Zafar Abbas, believed that her husband was tortured to death by police. She held CIA SP Umar Virk responsible for the death of her husband.
When contacted, the CIA SP categorically denied that Zafar Abbas was subjected to severe torture, resulting in his death.
He said police arrested him on July 19, 2008, and produced him before the court the next day. On July 21, he along with his son was again produced before the court of District and Sessions Judge which cancelled his bail. His condition went critical when he saw no chance to escape.
He was rushed to Services Hospital for treatment where he expired.
Responding to a query, Umar Virk said that during interrogation, Zafar Abbas had confessed that they had killed Naseem Bibi and got her property transferred in his name. Police also recovered gold jewellery of the victim woman besides Rs 550,000 from Zafar Abbas. Zafar Abbas’s body was removed to city mortuary for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.
