Sir Shah Muhammad Sulaiman was a genius who excelled in multiple fields, including physics, law and education, Dr Shah Maqbool Hussain Syed, the grandson of Sir Sulaiman, the first Muslim judge of the British Indian federal court, and the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court.

Dr Syed was speaking at a seminar about the life of Sir Shah Muhammad Sulaiman, the man who rejected Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and the Theory of Rotational Light.

The seminar-cum-Peace Awards ceremony was held in a very humble atmosphere at the National Museum of Pakistan, Karachi. The gathering was limited to family members, close associates, award recipients and media representatives.

Apart from being a noted scientist, a noted lawyer, and a respected judge, Sir Shah Sulaiman was an exceptional educationist as well. He succeeded Sir Ziauddin Ahmed as the vice-chancellor of the Aligarh University, and had the honour of holding that post three times.

“Although the primary interest of Sir Sulaiman was in science, but he chose law and education so that he could serve the people, especially Muslims,” Mumtaz Rafique, an eminent biographer, said in his pen sketch of Sir Sulaiman.

The Sir Shah Muhammad Sulaiman Peace Awards were presented to outstanding people in the field(s) of justice, media, administration, culture and human rights.

The Jurist award was given to deposed Justice Musheer Alam of the Sindh High Court (SHC). He had refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) of 2007. The Human Rights Award was presented to Advocate Yousuf Moulvi of the SHC, while the Journalism Award was presented to Shahid Hussain Mohali of Jang Press.

The Writers Award was presented to Pakistan Writers Guild secretary Ahmed Omar Shareef, Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) assistant registrar Saima Kiran Naqvi, Mumtaz Rafique, Shahbaz Siddiqui, Shahid Hussain Bokhari and Zaheer Uddin Shar. The awards were presented by Rizwan Ahmed, who also presided over the seminar.
