Women often are annoyed by the fact that all men have to do to get dressed for any occasion is tuck in one of their many same-looking shirts into very similar looking pants, while they must think and plan and purchase ahead of time if they are to make any kind of statement at all.
Designer Sadaf Fawad Khan dares to dream on behalf of all stylish men, and swims towards the deep end of summer with her breathable lawn and cotton collection for men, Hazure.
Intrigued by this style proposal (see on Pages 32 and 35), Instep asked SFK what goes on behind the scenes and in her studio.
How do you decide what you will be designing?
For the men’s debut lawn project , we drew inspiration from classic patterns like paisley and geometrics, usually observed in Mughal architectural details.
What is your go-to design process?
It’s a standard process which starts with conception of a product range, R&D for patterns and silhouettes, prototyping and then development. And of course, we pause for feedback and refinement at all stages.
What went behind this collection?
This collection was an aspirational project to explore the unstitched lawn market by introducing a new category. I felt that there isn’t much room in the saturated women’s lawn market. So why not tap into the male consumer? They inhabit the same planet as women, and live through the same cycle of eight months of summer.
Who is your go-to for inspiration?
I don’t look to a particular artist for inspiration. On a day-to-day basis there’s so much to observe and absorb from. The inspiration for this first drop comes from architectural details on building, brick patterns, geometric designs and a range of classic motifs like florals and the traditional Kashmiri paisley.
What is your personal style inspiration?
My personal style is very understated and classic. However, I do like to experiment with colors.
Whom do you think are the best dressed celebs/public figures in Pakistan?
Fawad Khan, Adnan Siddiqui, Yousaf Shahbaz, Sikandar Rizvi.
What’s on your playlist, moodboard, and screen while you work?
I prefer to do the brain work in silence with only visual stimulus. Pinterest is always the first starting point to research.
