Skardu: Complete strike has been observed across Gilgit-Baltistan against imposition of hundred percent income and withholding tax.
All markets, banks and transport offices were closed and roads presented a deserted look. The strike was called by GB Contractors Association which was supported by all political and religious organisations, civil society and business community.
Murtaza Ali, secretary general of the GB Contractors Association, told The News that the government did not pay heed to their demands but they will continue their struggle with the same spirit.
He said the tax legislation is a mandate of the GB council which is dissolved atpresent and has to be re-elected but the government imposed tax which is illegal. It was the first time in history of GB that banks transactions remained at almost zero, Ali added. He said they have given two days’ deadline to the government after which further strategy will be devised.
