DIR: A cop embraced martyrdom while an outlaw was killed in a police encounter in Akhagram village in Upper Dir district, sources said on Sunday.
The sources said that acting on a tip-off, cops from the Warai Police Station raided the hideout of a wanted criminal in the Akhagram village.
On seeing the cops, the outlaw opened fire on the police party, leaving Sub-Inspector Rafiullah critically injured. He was rushed to the Timergara Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The outlaw identified as Shah Rahim was also killed when the cops returned the fire during the encounter, which lasted four about two hours. The outlaw was wanted by the police and had been on the run since 2019.
A heavy contingent of the police arrived at the spot and seized one Kalashnikov, two hand-grenades and five magazines.
Meanwhile, the funeral prayer for the fallen cop was offered and he was laid to rest with state honours. Senior police officers and villagers attended the funeral.
