SUKKUR: As many as 10 people, including five of a family, were killed in three different drowning incidents of Sukkur region.
Reports said the Pakistan Navy’s divers have rescued eight members of a family, while five of them drowned in the KDA Canal (Kinjhar-Gujjo Canal) in Thatta. They said 13 members of a family were travelling to Jungshahi to visit their relatives on an auto rickshaw when the overspeeding vehicle plunged into the canal after colliding with a fence on the road. Local people and the Pakistan Navy divers rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation. They have succeeded in rescuing eight members of the family, while five of them could not be spared. The deceased were identified as Pooja, Laila, Ramo, Deeno Baghri and Husna.
In another incident of similar nature, three youth of Chohara Mandi in Sukkur, on a picnic, drowned in the Khairpur East Canal on Friday. Reports said the search was continuing but the water current was creating hurdles in the rescue operation. The parents of the victims said that the irrigation authorities were not helping in the operation, while the irrigation authorities said it was hard to close the canal. Meanwhile, reports said the bodies of two brothers, identified as 5-year-old Asam and Husnain Hothepoto, were recovered from Mir Rukhan Canal near Doulatpur Safhan in Nawabshah district, when the bodies were found floating on the surface of the canal. The parents said the children were playing on the bank of the canal, and they accidently fell into it.
