OCCUPIED SRINAGAR: The High Court in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IoK) has ordered the state government strictly implement an existing order which bans the sale of beef (cow meat) in the valley.
According to reports from Indian media, the court outlawed the sale of beef on a petition filed by Advocate Parimoksh Seth who contended that cow slaughter and the sale of beef hurts the religious sentiments of a section of society.
He said that slaughtering bovine animals was a punishable offence under Indian Penal Code, adding that possessing meat of slaughtered bovine animals is also a crime.
The division bench of the IoK High court, comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal, ordered strict implementation of the ban on the slaughter and sale of bovine animals.
The court also directed the director general of police (DGP) to ensure strict compliance of the order on beef by issuing appropriate directions to all the senior superintendents (SSPs) and station house officers (SHOs) in the valley.
