Five injured in court

MULTAN: Five people suffered critical knife injuries in a brawl that occurred on Monday between two groups at the Multan district courts’ judicial lock up during the hearing of a case. According to police, when handcuffed accused Fahim was brought before the senior civil judge then a group led by his rival Mehboob attacked him with bottles in front of judicial lock. The men of the Mehboob group used daggers, leaving five men injured. The brawl continued for fifteen minutes.Police arrested Murtaza alias Lala, Faizan and Mehboob Ali. Four attackers, including Rizwan and Maqsood managed to escape. The Chehllyak police said both the groups belonged to Qureshi group and the dispute was over litigation over a piece of land.

Rice mill owners warned of govt action

SUKKUR: The Deputy Commissioner of Qambar-Shahdadkot, Anwar-ul-Haq, had said that he would take action against those rice mill owners who had declined to purchase paddy at Rs900 per maund from farmers.Meanwhile, Mir Mahboob Ali Jamali, president of Sindh-Balochistan rice mill owners association, said when there were no buyers, how could they purchase paddy and rice at high rates. He said the Sindh government should stop threatening mill owners. Hafeez Chandio, a rice farmer, warned the government of starting an agitation.

Newborn kidnapped from hospital recovered

GUJRANWALA: Police recovered a kidnapped infant from Lahore and arrested four accused, including a woman. This was disclosed by SP Dr Rizwan Ahmed in a press conference here on Monday. Two awarded 14 years jail term

PESHAWAR: An Accountability Court on Monday awarded 14 year imprisonment to two persons held by the Sarband police on April 8 for smuggling explosives. The police had arrested one Shah Hussain while carrying 1,250 kilograms of explosives, prima chord and fuses while one of his accomplices Uzair had escaped who was arrested later. The Accountability Court on Monday convicted both the accused and awarded them 14 year imprisonment. Meanwhile, the Accountability Court judge Asim Imam sent the director general of the Provincial Housing Authority Javed Ahmad to the central prison on judicial remand. He was arrested for embezzlement of millions of rupees in the Jalozai Housing Scheme. Also, an Anti Narcotics Court awarded life term and imposed a fine of Rs400,000 on two accused Rizwan and Usman for drug trafficking.

Army troops start arriving for LG polls

JHANG: Following the requisition made by the district government, the Pakistan Army troops and Rangers will start arriving in the district today (Tuesday) to ensure law and orders situation during the local government elections scheduled on December 5. The commanders of the Pak Army and Rangers will attend the briefing of the district administration and police regarding polling and security arrangements. According to sources, 3,885 constables, 713 head constables, 517 ASIs and SIs, 58 inspectors, 26 DSPs, 4 SPs, 1,551 policemen of reserve police, 3,719 cops of special force would be deployed in and outside 1,084 polling stations to ensure foolproof security to polling staff and voters on the polling day. More than 60 police gunmen will also provide personal security to DRO, ROs and officers of the district administration holding the elections.

JI delegation meets Pervez Khattak

PESHAWAR: A delegation of the Jamaat-i-Islami on Monday met Chief Minister Pervez Khattak to discuss various issues, including fight against corruption in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The JI delegation led by provincial amir Mushtaq Ahmad Khan and Senior Minister Inayatullah Khan discussed various issues relating to the affairs of the government. Murderer gets life imprisonment

ARIFWALA: ASJ Shakir Hassan on Monday awarded life imprisonment to convict Asghar and acquitted three co-accused, giving them the benefit of the doubt on Monday. Muhammad Asghar alias Asghari of 275/EB, Burewala, along with co-accused Muhammad Nawaz, Elahi Seen and Noor Ahmad had killed Faiz Farid of Qaboola police station in the area of Chak 123/EB. The Ahmad Yar police registered the case. The court also ordered Asghar to pay Rs200,000 as compensation money to legal heirs of the deceased. In case of default, the convict will have to undergo another six-month imprisonment.

Alleged extortionist held in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The police on Monday arrested a man allegedly involved in making calls for extortion to a government employee. One Abdul Ghafoor, a resident of Dir, was arrested while search was on for another Noor Bakhsh of Chaghi in Balochistan for making threatening calls and demanding Rs100 million as extortion from a government officer in the Civil Secretariat, Ghulam Hussain Ghazi. The official approached the police after the accused started making calls on his phones and threatened to kidnap his kids. The police succeeded in arresting Abdul Ghafoor from Dir while search was on to arrest the other person.

Smuggling bid foiled, three held

PESHAWAR: The Hayatabad Police on Monday foiled a bid to smuggle contraband items worth millions of rupees in three tractor trailers and arrested the drivers. Deputy Superintendent of Police of Hayatabad Atiq Shah told reporters that taking action on a tip-off the police intercepted three trailers and recovered non-Customs paid items from the vehicles. The official said the goods seized by the police included tea leaves, perfumes, cosmetics, auto spare parts, cloth and other items in hundreds of sacks. The official said cases were lodged against the accused and an investigation was launched.

45 suspects held in Hangu

HANGU: The police arrested 45 suspected persons, including 14 Afghan nationals, during a search operation in Doaba, official sources said on Monday. The sources said that the police launched a search operation in Doaba and arrested 45 suspected persons, including 14 Afghan nationals. Killer gets death in Toba Tek Singh

TOBA TEK SINGH: District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Yar Wallana on Monday awarded death sentence to a killer. The court also ordered the killer to pay Rs400,000 as compensation money to heirs of the deceased. The court acquitted co-accused Qaisar, Majid and Rafi giving them the benefit of doubt. Faisal of Chak 395/JB had killed Qaisar Rehman in 2014 over an old enmity.

Eight LG candidates booked

BAHAWALPUR: Eight LG candidates were booked for violating the election code of conduct. Those booked are Bilal Baloch and Shah Nawaz Baloch of the PML-N, Rizwan Elahi and Adeel Khan of the PTI, Junaid Qureshi and Aslam Khan of the PTI and Zaman Ali of the PML-N. All the candidates are contesting for the slots of UC chairmen and vice-chairmen. They were booked by Cantonment and Civil Lines police stations.

Dacoit killed in police encounter

GUJRANWALA: A dacoit was killed in an alleged police encounter on Sunday night. On a tip-off, the Satellite Town police raided a house and seeing the police party accused Mehboob alias Booba Pathan opened fire at the policemen and in retaliation he received bullets and died on the spot. Mehboob was wanted in a number of dacoity, robbery cases and police encounter incidents.
