Around 788 illegal advertising hoardings, including 76 billboards, were removed within the past month along the major thoroughfares of Karachi, Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad was informed on Tuesday while chairing a meeting to review a drive against illegal advertising boards and the progress in an ongoing campaign for the beautification of Sharea Faisal.
He was told that illegal advertisement boards were removed from along the Korangi Expressway, University Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Sher Shah Suri Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Khayaban-e-Iqbal, Khyaban-e-Rumi and other major roads of the city. It was said around 20 illegal advertising hoardings were also removed from different parts of the city since Monday.
The officials of Cantonment Board Clifton informed the meeting that advertisement billboards had been removed along major roads and service roads in accordance with judgement of Supreme Court of Pakistan given in August, 2004.
The civic officials concerned informed the governor that illegal billboards had been removed from a portion of Sharea Faisal — from FTC till the Karsaz traffic intersection — and also from the tail-end portion of the road near the airport.
Officials of the Cantonment Board Faisal informed the meeting that six different civic agencies controled parts of Sharea Faisal from Karsaz till Malir Halt, and along this portion 49 advertising billboards were still present. It was said a number of billboard owners had obtained stay orders from courts against the impending action of the government against illegal signboards installed on major roads.
The governor was also informed on the occasion that a signboard within the allowed dimensions would be installed right on the entrance of Sharea Faisal from Karachi airport.
