A total of 1,874 nomination papers out of 1,965 for the seats of chairman and vice-chairman have been accepted, while 141 were rejected, for the third phase of the local government elections in Sindh, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Thursday.
With December 3 set as the polling date for the third phase, the ECP has given all candidates till October 30 to file appeals against the selection process and any cases that may come up would be decided by November 5.
As per a report released by the ECP, 191 nominations out of a total of 201 have been accepted for 38 district councilor seats, while nine candidates were turned down.
For 964 general councilor seats, 6,048 candidates filed nomination papers, of which, 5,549 were accepted and 499 others rejected.
The ECP report also contained a district-wise breakdown for Karachi, according to which, in Karachi East district, 288 nominations were accepted and 87 others rejected for the 31 chairman and vice-chairman seats up for grabs. The district has 124 general councillor seats, for which 906 nominations were accepted and 137 deemed inadmissible.
In the Karachi Central district, 405 nominations were accepted and 14 rejected for the electoral contest of 51 chairman and vice-chairman seats. For general councillor seat candidatures, 968 were accepted and 104 rejected.
In Karachi South district, 212 nominations were filed and 10 rejected for 31 seats of chairman and vice- chairman seats. Similarly, 101 papers were rejected during the scrutiny of nominations filed for the 124 seats of general councillor. In total, 511 nominations were accepted for the general councilor seats in the said district.
In Karachi West district, 488 nominations were accepted and 11 were rejected for contest on 46 slots of chairman and vice-chairman. Of the papers filed for 184 general councillor seats, 1,417 nominations were accepted and 25 rejected. Meanwhile, 26 nominations were accepted for elections on the six district councilor seats and one was rejected.
In Malir district, 243 nominations were filed for the 17 seats of chairman and vice chairman seats while eight were rejected. For the 68 general councillor seats, 959 nominations were accepted and 27 were rejected. 165 nominations were accepted and nine were rejected for 68 district councilor seats.
In Korangi district, 278 nominations filed for 37 seats of chairman and vice-chairman were accepted and 11 rejected. While for the general councillor seats, 788 nominations were accepted and 105 were rejected.
