Rickshaw driver fined Rs1,000 for beating up warden

A rickshaw driver was reported to have beaten up a traffic warden who stopped him for a one-way traffic violation.

CCTV footage of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the incensed driver beating up the warden. According to the New Town police, the incident took place close to a private hospital near National Stadium Road.

The warden, namely Shuja, had stopped rickshaw driver Ashiq for a one-way traffic violation after which the driver swore at the warden and also beaten him up, according to the traffic police. A large number of people also gathered and called the police in.

According to the police, a team was dispatched to the scene and a fine of Rs1,000 was imposed on the driver. It was unclear whether the police registered a case against the driver.

A week ago, around 200 were arrested in Karachi as the traffic police began taking action against people travelling on the wrong side of the road. According to a Sindh police spokesperson, 4,765 motorists were fined a total of Rs1,146,650 on the first day of the new crackdown.

As many as 163 cases were registered under Section 279 against the drivers. District City was on top with arresting 85 drivers, District South 41, District East 27, District Korangi, 13, District West 11, District Malir 10 and District Central six. The traffic DIG had initiated the campaign on the directives of Sindh Inspector General of Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam.
