Islamabad : For its December meeting, the Floral Art Society (FAS) Rawalpindi/Islamabad – organised a competition titled, ‘Floral Artistry.’

The competition was divided into three different categories – Plaque (Ethnic); Bouquet d’Art and Sculptural Brilliance. Members could participate by entering all three categories or one. Of course this option was taken up by the more seasoned members of the society but participation by all members in each category was impressive, especially in the Plaque section – there were some really very good depictions of our ethnic items of art and daily use. Unfortunately some proper depictions lost out because they were not in ‘3D,’ which was a requirement.

For the uninitiated, Bouquet d’Art involves an arrangement based on a painting; a plaque depicts an arrangement, in miniature, of a subject of choice on a plaque of a given size and of course everyone knows what sculpture is – in floral art, these sculptures are constructed with plant material.

The staging time given was 8.30 am till noon, after which judging took place, with the judges - Aisha Khalid; Nusrat Belal and WaqarunNisa Boolani discussing the work on display and awarding points according to their evaluation. The guest of honour was president of the Pakistan Foreign Office Wives Association (PFOWA) Mehvish Sohail.

After the staging time, the programme began with Tilawat Quran by Hina Kamran; followed by Secretary General, Yasmin Salman giving a brief report about last month’s meeting, then requesting the judges to say a few words. All three of them said that the standard of entries for Bouquet d’Art was of an international standard – they should know as they have participated in international competitions and even acted as judges now and again. Waqar Boolani said it had been a difficult choice but a winner had to be picked – and a few extra prizes were also given. Nusrat Belal announced the winners and Aisha Khalid did a critique for those who were interested to know what was right and wrong in the arrangements. The results were as follows:-

Bouquet d’Art: First, Farhat Zaman; second, Asma Ansari; third, Nageen Malik; fourth, Shakeela Khalil and fifth, Huma Ehsan.

Plaque: First Farhat Zaman; second Huma Ehsan and Arshee Javed and third Samina Tariq.

Sculptural Brilliance: First Ghazala, second Asma, third Farzana Ansari.
