Safeeran-e-Urdu’s ‘Terhi Mashaira’ held at KU

KARACHI: An Urdu poetry recitation session was organised by Bazm-e-Safeeran-e-Urdu at the Department of Urdu, University of Karachi, to provide an exciting platform to nurture the young and emerging poets.

The gathering was presided over by prominent poet and scholar Dr Shadab Ehsani, attended by all the members of the faculty and hosted by Hammad Ahmed. The Chairperson of Urdu Department University of Karachi, Dr Tanzeem-ul-Firdous facilitated and provided all means to manage such a memorable poetic congregation.

The young and emerging poets, including Ehtesham Anwar, Waqar Sahar, Mir Sajjad Haider, Muhammad Salahuddin, Saleem Abbas Qadri, Khalil Ahmed, Zakria Ali, Sumaiya Bashir Sahar, Uzma Jabin Falak, Rab Nawaz, Muhammad Rehmat, Yawar Hussain, Rehan Asar, Raja Arif, Iqbal, Arshan and Syeda Hina. While, some faculty members also recited their poetry on the occasion, including Dr Shamma Afroz, Dr Tehmina Abbas, Dr Sadaf Tabassum and Aisha Naz.

President Bazm-e-Safeeran-e-Urdu, Ehtesham Anwar welcomed the gathering and elaborated the need of such gathering especially for the new and emerging talents. He vowed to continue providing such an opportunity to all young poets and writers to present their creation.

The first-ever session organised by “Safeeran-e-Urdu” was a “Terhi Mashaira,” in which the bards are bond to compose their poetry within a given rhyme and metre. Versified subjects, including current political and social milieus are pinpointed in their poems while few young poets turned to romantic expressions, which were also appreciated by the audience.

In his brief talk, Dr Shadab Ehsani suggested that Safeeran-e-Urdu’s literary circles should not be confined to Urdu poem (Ghazal) alone but also provide a forum to young fiction writers and critics to present their work. He also thanked to the Chairperson Dr Tanzeem-ul-Firdous and the student advisers Dr Salman and Dr Safia Aftab for facilitating the students.

Prior to the poetic session, the names of the office-bearers of Bazm-e-Safeeran-e-Urdu were also announced with President Ehtesham Anwar, General Secretary Mir Sajjad Haider, Joint-Secretaries Muhammad Waqar Sahar and Sumaiya Bashir Sahar, Treasurer Hammad Ahmed, Information Secretary Saleem Abbas Qadri, Event Secretaries Khalil Ahmed, Zakria Ali, Saima Ali and Syeda Hina.
