Woman has large-size cyst removed at Lyari hospital

A milestone was achieved by doctors of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical College, Lyari (formerly known as Lyari General Hospital), as they performed the facility’s first gynecologic laparoscopic surgery enabling a young woman to be relieved of a large-size cyst.

The hospital, functional in one of the most backward areas of Karachi since its upgradation as a full-fledged teaching hospital, has emerged s a facility that is providing great relief to the people of Lyari and the adjoining areas.

The hospital is manned by senior professionals qualified in a wide range of medical specialties and sub-specialties. Principal Prof Anjum Rehman, along with a team of competent gynecologists, including Dr Sahar Fatima, conducted the surgery in conjunction with a two-day Gynecologic Laparoscopic Workshop held at the hospital’s gynecology and obstetrics department.

Talking to media, she said gynecologic laparoscopy is an alternative to open surgery and holds significant success rate in handling endometrial or uterine cancer. “This is one of the most common gynecologic cancers among women in Pakistan.” Prof Anjum Rehman said laparoscopic removal of large-size cyst at the hospital was one of its kinds in the country itself while very few like it had been even reported in the world.-
