Addressing criticism that came her way after she raised voice against eight-year-old Asifa Bano rape attack, Indian tennis player Sania Mirza tweeted that she speaks against rape cases of all girls, irrespective of what religion they belong to.
Owing to the recent streak of rape incidents in Kathua, Unnao districts and elsewhere that has shook Indians to the core Sania Mirza called out people to treat religion and crimes as two separate entities.
In a long Twitter update Sania wrote, “How can anyone say ‘you said this for a 8 year old ‘Muslim’ ggirl but not for a victim who was Hindu’?.... NO CRIME, I repeat no crime done by anyone, any person by any religion, is ok…”
She added, “… Justice needs to be served for the girl in Kashmir, in UP, in Assam and anywhere else this gruesome crime is done… by anyone. Just leave religion, nationality, colour or creed out guys…”
Sania also outrightly dismissed remarks that she tweeted in support of a victim just because she was Muslim.
“I ask this of you not as an Indian, not as a person who is married to a person from ‘Pakistan’… or as a woman, but as a human being,” she cleared.
