The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday set aside the conviction of a man in the murder case of a paramilitary soldier.
Jehangir Bengali had been sentenced to life imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in May 2014 having found him guilty of murdering Rangers soldier Mohammad Fahim Akhtar in a shootout in the Korangi area on August 13, 2010.
According to the prosecution, Jehangir, along with co-accused Rasheed and Abbas, had fired on a Rangers mobile, resulting in Akhtar’s martyrdom. The three were arrested later and tried in the ATC, which handed down a life term to Jehangir but acquitted the co-accused for want of evidence.
The counsel for the convict said the prosecution had failed to prove its case and his client should be released. The SHC then set aside the conviction for reasons to be recorded later and ordered the appellant to be released if not required in other cases.
