PESHAWAR: A female student allegedly extorting money from people was arrested here on Monday, police said.Police arrested Laila from the Mashokhel area on the outskirts of Peshawar.Police officials said the alleged extortionist used a voice changer and pretended to be the member of a banned militant group to collect extortion money. The police have lodged an FIR against the extortionist and have shifted her to the central prison — after court’s permission — to carry out further investigation.

Inclusion of KP’s southern districts in

106 Afghans arrested in Peshawar crackdown

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar Police on Monday arrested 106 Afghans residing illegally in the city. A press release said 106 Afghans residing illegally in the city were arrested under the 14 Foreigners’ Act during a crackdown. In addition, 99 other criminals, seven proclaimed offenders and 37 other suspects were also arrested during the action. province. They said that 56 Afghans and 11 locals were also arrested for violating rules about the use of loudspeakers.

48 suspects held during search operation in capital
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Police arrested 48 suspects during search operation in various areas of the city, a police spokesman said. IGP Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan directed all SDPOs and SHOs to enhance patrolling as well as checking in various areas of the city and conduct search operation at slum areas, Afghan habitats, under construction buildings, workshops, bus stands and inns. Following his directions, Sub-Divisional police officer performing in Islamabad headed this search operation in the areas kohsar and Sihala. Station House Officers of these police stations along with police team conducted search in the area of Rawat, Sector F-6, F-7 Said pur and under construction buildings as well as plazas there. They succeeded to nab 48 suspects who are being investigated further. IGP has appealed the citizens to remain vigilant and inform police in case of any suspicious activity around them

‘0.6 million Balochistan children to be enrolled’
QUETTA: Pakistan Muslim League-N MPA Rahila Durrani and Provincial Secretary Education Abdul Saboor Kakar have said that about 600,000 children of the province would be enrolled in schools under ‘Welcome School Programme’ of the provincial government. In a statement issued, here on Monday, they said that the Balochistan government is going to implement its ‘Welcome School Programme’ to increase enrollment of children at schools. “The provincial government has increased education budget to 24 percent,” they said adding that children to be enrolled at schools under Welcome School Programme would also be given free of cost uniform and books. They further said that tree plantation would also be carried out in school.—

Two power pylons blown up near Jacobabad

SUKKUR: Miscreants blew up two electric towers of 132KV near Jacobabad on Monday, which resulted in suspension of power supply to Balochistan. Reports said the miscreants had attached some explosive material with the two towers in the limits of Tallani in Jacobabad and blew the up. Police and the law-enforcement agencies rushed to scene and were investigating. Power supply to most parts of Balochistan remained suspended, while officials said restoration of power supply would take some hours.

Balochistan private schools seek protection
QUETTA: Balochistan Private Schools Foundation has urged the provincial government to provide security to private schools as some institutions are receiving threats from unidentified persons. In a statement issued here on Monday, the Chairman of the Foundation, Jaffar Khan and the General Secretary, Nazar Muhammad said that unidentified men demanded extortion from the management of a private school in Nawan Killi area of Quetta city and gave threats of dire consequences.

Man killed in Kalat firing incident
KALAT: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a man in Kalat town area of Balochistan, police said on Monday. According to police, Riaz Ahmad s/o Muhammad Akhtar resident of Kalat was on way to home when armed motorcyclists opened fire at him and managed to escape from the scene. As a result, he succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital. His body was handed over to the heirs after legal formalities. The reason of killing could not be ascertained so far. Police have registered a case.

Seven coalminers laid to rest in Shangla

BISHAM: The coalminers who died of suffocation in a mine in Dakki area in Loralai district of Balochistan were laid to rest in native areas in Puran tehsil on Monday. Seven labourers died of suffocation in a coalmine in Dakki area in Loralai last week. The military helicopter airlifted the bodies to Peshawar wherefrom they were transported to Puran in ambulances. Bodies of the seven victims Taj Muhammad, Alam Khan, Aqal Zaman, Bakht Rozal, Shafaat, Muhibullah, Amir Alam and Hamidullah were retrieved after hectic efforts. The Balochistan government announced Rs0.7million each for the victim families. Elected representatives and a large number of locals attended the funeral prayers for of the victims. Most of the victims are survived by young widows and teenage children.

SMS service on traffic update launched in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, with the help of students, has launched an SMS service for getting updates about traffic from the Traffic Control to enable the public to get traffic updates immediately by just sending an SMS to 8333. The service has been introduced keeping in view the fact that people face difficulties while using the road with respect to traffic. It would enable the general public to get traffic updates immediately. The SMS Alert system was prepared by Syed Shahzad and Faizullah, students of Peshawar, who have voluntarily prepared this system to facilitate the public. Anyone who would type PT and send it to 8333 from any network would receive update about the traffic situation in Peshawar city.

PML-Q leader asks govt to implement NAP

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) provincial president Intikhab Chamkani has asked the federal government to take serious steps for the implementation of National Action Plan. Speaking at a news conference on Monday, he said all the political parties had authorised the federal government to take a decision to stamp out terrorism. “The government is not taking tangible decisions,” he believed. The PML-Q leader also opposed any change in the economic corridor route.

Tree plantation campaign launched in KP

127 suspects held; arms seized in Kohat

KOHAT: The police arrested 127 suspected persons including 16 illegal Afghan nationals during crackdown against the outlaws and seized arms in the district on Monday, official sources said. They said that the police launched crackdown in Shakar Darra, Gambat, Nandrika, Dandoki, Nari Banda, Paka, Ghar Killay, Malokabad, Spin Killay, Totiabad, Ziarat Sheikhullah, Zera, Chorlakai, Khawaja Piala, Nalo Kandao and Ghurizai areas. Up to 127 suspected persons were arrested during the swoop. At least 16 Afghan nationals living in the district illegally were also arrested. The police also recovered six guns, two shotguns, four pistols and large number of cartridges from them.

Bomber blows himself up in FR Bannu

BANNU: An alleged suicide bomber blew himself up while his handler escaped in Janikhel area in the Frontier Region (FR) Bannu on Monday, sources said. The sources said that the security forces were carrying water-tank to the military camp in Bakkakhel when they spotted two suspected persons. “They challenged the suspects to stop but they hurled a hand-grenade at the forces and tried to run away”, the sources added. They said that security forces chased them and one of them blew himself up while his handler managed to escape in the village. The militant who blew himself up was identified as Mamdo Jan, son of Abdul Manan, belonging to Sra Rogha in North Waziristan Agency.

Extortionists, militant arrested in Tank

TANK: The police claimed to have arrested two extortionists and a militant during raids in various areas in the district. District Police Officer Kifayatullah Wazir told reporters that the police arrested two extortionists. He said the police started investigation after a few citizens received extortion calls. The extortionists, whose identities were not disclosed, were arrested after making phone calls to the citizens. The extortionists were handed over to the Counter Terrorism Department for interrogation. He said that police also arrested a militant carrying Rs0.5million head money.

250 Afghan nationals deported

LANDIKOTAL: Pakistani authorities deported 250 Afghan nationals who had been arrested during raids and search operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, official sources said on Monday. Khyber Agency Political Agent Syed Shahab Ali Shah told The News that the security forces and other law-enforcing agencies had arrested 250 Afghan and handed them over to the political administration for deportation. The unregistered Afghans were handed over to Afghan border authorities.
