An anti-terrorism court on Friday granted the physical remanded of a man accused of kidnapping 24-year-old Laraib Muhammad Ali to the police till February 21.
The investigation officer informed the court that the suspect, Rehmat Gul, with his absconding accomplices had kidnapped Laraiab on Janaury 26 and had demanded Rs2 million from his family as ransom. However, he had released the young man a day later without receiving any ransom.
The court was informed that Gul was arrested in a joint raid conducted by the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) and Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) and a case (FIR No 16/2015) against him was registered under Section 265-A/392/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
The investigation officer requested the court to grant physical remand of the accused so he could be interrogated about the whereabouts of his accomplices.
The CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy had become embroiled in a controversy when Rangers personnel arrived at his residence early in the morning on January 27.
In a press conference later that day, Chinoy had denied rumours that the Rangers Special Task Force (RSTF) had raided his residence, claiming that the paramilitary officials had come to seek information gathered by the CPLC about the kidnapping of Laraib Muhammad Ali.
However, the Rangers did not provide any clarification for the incident. The force only released a brief press release stating that the RSTF had rescued the 24-year-old victim from Indus Plaza in Sohrab Goth.
According to the statement, Ali was abducted from Site Area a couple of days ago and the kidnappers had demanded Rs2 million for releasing him.
