A corruption case against former Sindh police chief Ghulam Hyder Jamali and others took a new turn on Tuesday as the defence lawyer moved an application before the accountability court concerned arguing that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) could no longer try his clients under its laws as the Sindh government had repealed the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), 1999, in the province.
At the outset of the hearing, the lawyer also challenged the court’s jurisdiction to hear the NAB reference that accuses eight former police officers – including Jamali, Fida Hussain Shah, Ghulam Nabi Keerio, Ayaz Hussain Memon and Abdul Razzaq – of committing corruption of over Rs500m by making illegal appointments and out-of-turn promotions.
The court ordered the anti-corruption watchdog’s prosecutor to appear before the court and submit comments on the matter at the next hearing on August 31.
