Results of annual matric exams announced

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi on Sunday announced the science, general groups and special candidates’ results for Secondary School Certificate Part-II annual examinations, 2017.

According to the gazette issued, 155,469 candidates were registered out of which a total of 154,499 students appeared for the papers. Out of the total 112,369 cleared all the papers. The overall percentage of students who passed the exams was calculated at 72.73.

The gazette further maintains that 18,800 students secured an A-1 grade, while 29,118 candidates bagged an A-grade; a total of 30,672 students acquired a B-grade, while 23,786 candidates managed to secure a C-grade. Furthermore, 9,241 students got a D-grade, while 321 candidates cleared their exams with an E-grade and a total of 431 students passed examinations in additional subjects.

The total number of male candidates who appeared for the papers was 85,243, of which 84,686 sat for the exams. Of the total male candidates, 6,552 students secured an A-1 grade, 13,578 candidates got an A-grade, 16,973 students secured a B-grade, 16,057 candidates got a C-grade, 7,541 students cleared their exams with a D-grade and 302 candidates managed to secure an E-grade; 299 students passed exams with additional subjects.

On the other hand, the gazette shows that 70,226 female candidates had registered and 69,813 of them appeared for the exams. A total of 12,248 female students secured an A1-grade, 15,540 got an A-grade, 13,699 cleared their papers with a B-grade, 7,729 candidates got a C-grade, 1,700 managed to secure a D-grade, whereas 19 were declared passed with an E-grade; 132 female students cleared exams with additional subjects.

General group (Regular)

As per the gazette, 15,167 candidates registered for the General group (Regular) examinations, against which 15,146 appeared for the exams. The overall percentage of students who cleared the exams of the group was calculated at 64.03.

As per the BSEK’s results, 213 students secured an A-1 grade, 1,238 bagged an A-grade, 2,696 got a B-grade, 3,452 managed to secure a C-grade, 1,969 secured a D-grade, whereas 130 candidates managed to clear their exams with an E-grade.

The total number of male students who registered for the examinations was 3,647; however, 3,638 of them appeared for the exams. Of the total students 28 secured an A-1 grade, 207 got an A-grade, 580 students cleared their papers with a B-grade, 2,586 got a C-grade, 570 students cleared their papers with a D-grade, whereas 59 candidates managed to secure an E-grade.

The board’s gazette further maintains that a total number of 11,520 female candidates registered for the examinations, but 11,508 of them sat for the papers.

Of those who appeared in the exams, 185 bagged an A1-grade, 1,031 secured an A-grade, 2, 696 students got a B-grade, 2,586 acquired a C-grade, 1,399 managed to clear their papers with a D-grade, 71 were declared passed with an E-grade.

General group (Private)

For the General group (Private), 7,957 candidates got themselves registered for the examinations, out of which 7,914 appeared. The overall pass percentage was calculated at 60.95.

As many as 16 students secured an A-1 grade, 198 bagged an A-grade, 913 students got a B-grade, 1,782 acquired a C-grade, 1,092 secured a D-grade and 83 candidates got an E; 273 students cleared their exams with additional subjects.

Of the total candidates who registered for the examination, 5,743 were male, out of which 5,708 appeared for the papers. Only three of them secured an A-1 grade, 86 bagged an A-grade, 374 cleared their papers with a B-grade, 1,330 got a C-grade, 828 male students secured a D-grade, while 67 of them managed to clear their exams with an E-grade.

The total number of female candidates who registered for the papers was 2,214, out of which 2,206 appeared for the exams. A total of 13 bagged an A1-grade, 112 candidates secured an A-grade, 374 students cleared their papers with a B-grade, 452 candidates got a C-grade, 264 students managed to clear their exams with a D-grade and 16 got an E.

Special candidates

As per the gazette, 94 special candidates had registered for the papers and 93 of them appeared for the exams. Of the total who appeared, 89 candidates managed to clear their exams in the first division, while four acquired a second division.

Position holders

A ceremony presided over by former Higher Education Commission chief, Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, was held for the groups’ position holders. The first, second and third position holders of each group were distributed cheques of Rs50,000, Rs30,000 and Rs20,000 respectively.

For the Science group, the first, second and third positions were secured by Ali Zia Khan – roll number 320485 - of the KBV CAA Model School and College, Syed Affan Ahmed Bukhari - roll number 318578 - of The Crescent Academy, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Campus-I and Laraib Shahzad - roll number 428782 - of the Programmer School, situated in C-132, Sector 11-B, North Karachi, respectively.

Zia secured a 93.88 percent by obtaining 798 marks out of a total of 850, whereas Bukhari secured 93.52 percent by obtaining 795 marks and Laraib secured 93.41 percent by getting a total of 794 marks

Requesting concerned provincial authorities to prioritise improving the education sector, Zia said he wanted to pursue his Intermediate studies at the prestigious DJ Science College.

On the other hand, Syed Affan Bukhari expressed his wish to become a doctor. He opined that hard work is the key to success.

Laraib, who also wants to pursue a career in medical science, said the examination system and the level of studies has improved in recent years.

As far as the General group was concerned, Hafiza Romaisa – roll number 551166 – and Sanobia Akram – roll number 551174 - of the Iqra Huffaz Girls’ Secondary School clinched the first and second positions respectively.

The third position was secured by Zujaja – roll number 556623 – of the Citizen Secondary School (Girls Campus), Gulshan-e-Faisal, Bath Island.

Hafiza secured a 91.05 percent by obtaining 774 marks out of a total of 850, while Sanobia secured 89.76 percent by obtaining 763 marks; Zujaja secured an 89.17 percent by acquiring 758 marks.

Speaking to the media, Hafiza stressed on the need for Pakistanis to unite and not remain divided into sectarian and ethnic groups.

Speaking highly of her father, an electronic shop’s salesman, Zujaja said she believed she had made her parents proud by securing a third position.

The special candidates who secured the first, second and third positions were Faria - roll number 1531 – and Saira Iqbal – roll number 1525 – and Ramezza – roll number 1526 - of the Absa School for the Deaf.

Faria secured an 86.70 percent by obtaining 737 marks, while Saira secured an 86.35 percent by obtaining a total of 734 marks, whereas Rameeza got 86.25 percent by obtaining 733 marks.

Faria called for there to be established more institutes for people like her; Rameeza, on the other hand, shared she wanted to pursue a career in Graphic Designing.

Nazia Batool, a teacher who came along with the students as an interpreter, also demanded the government provide facilities for such students and called for people to change their perceptions regarding deaf and dumb people. BSEK Chairman Dr Saeed Uddin also spoke at the event and shared details of the board's efforts to streamline the result disbursement process through the use of modern technological tools.
