The Mohajir Rabita Council (MRC) has expressed serious concerns over law enforcers’ unwarranted raids in Mohajir-dominated residential areas, arrest of innocent Mohajir youth and the consequent ransom extorted from their families by the Sindh Rangers and police.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the MRC’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) accused law enforcers of manhandling and humiliating Mohajirs during the raids, as well as of illegal detention.
The committee called for accountability of officials involved in these raids and urged all domestic and international human rights organisations to take immediate notice of Mohajirs’ predicament. “They (law enforcers) violate the sanctity and privacy of our homes and manhandle females. Despite repeated complaints, the federal and provincial government has been ignoring the matter which, for us, is tantamount to encouraging the law enforcers.”
The committee claimed that Mohajirs were still not seen as ‘sons of the soil’ and that the non-Mohajir investigators picked for the raids used obscene and provocative language against them and their families. “On the other hand, the ministers of the Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government miss no opportunity to further malign Mohajirs, even subjecting them to severe humiliation on the provincial assembly floor.”
The CEC reminded the government and LEAs of the tremendous sacrifices that Mohajirs had offered for the creation of Pakistan. “Mohajir women were, for their love for Pakistan, subjected to brutal atrocities including rape. Mohajirs are a prestigious nation and would prefer death over humiliation and mockery,” read the statement.
