An anti-terrorism court (ATC) awarded a 10-year jail sentence on Tuesday to one Atif Kibria over charges of extortion and possession of illegal weapons.
The ATC sentenced Kibria to 10 years in prison for forcing one Abdul Qadir on March 9 to pay him Rs500,000.
Kibria had told Qadir that he was working for Rafique Baloch, who is associated with the People’s Aman Committee.
The accused was arrested on March 10 when he was about to collect the extortion money from Qadir.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs70,000 on Kibria. If he failed to pay the fine, the accused would have to serve an additional one-year jail term.
‘Gangsters’ acquitted
An ATC acquitted alleged gangsters Shahid Hussain alias Darinda and Tariq Aziz alias Seeyah Baat of murder, attempted murder and attack, as the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them.
The court was hearing cases against them from 2012, but due to lack of sound evidences, the accused pleaded that they should be acquitted before the conclusion of the trial. The court deemed it appropriate to acquit the accused.
Show-cause notice
An ATC issued a show-cause notice to investigation officer (IO) Malik Muhammad Adil to explain why he had failed to assist the court in the case of an accused, Saeed, and others charged with attempted murder and possession of illegal arms.
The court noted that the IO had not produced himself or any witnesses in court, and directed him to respond to the show-cause notice on January 24.
