Islamabad: Khyber Pakh-toonkhwa, which reported the second highest number of polio cases in Pakistan last year, confirmed the country’s first wild poliovirus type-1 case of 2015 on Saturday.
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), the new case is from district Tank in KP. Samples of the affected child, who has tested positive for the crippling disease, had been collected on January 3.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has thus far confirmed 303 cases in 2014, with Fata topping the list with 177 cases, followed by KP with 69 cases, Balochistan with 23 and Punjab with 4. The total national count for 2014 is expected to be finalised by the end of January as some samples are still pending laboratory confirmation.
