The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) has introduced a new membership program in military medicine, MCPS – Military Medicine, with immediate effect and issued a notification in this regard to all concerned authorities.
In changing geo-political situation in Pakistan and the whole Muslim world, there is a need to train doctors to serve in all circumstances and in the areas where population is facing conflicts, said Controller of Examinations and Elected Councillor at CPSP Islamabad Centre Professor Dr. Shoaib Shafi while talking to ‘The News’.
He added that at the time, the population in Pakistan has been under a continuous threat of terrorists activities and taking this into consideration, the CPSP introduced membership program in military medicine.
The military medicine is a specialty that can cater to the preventive and interventional needs of soldiers apart from providing medical services to masses in battlefield and the areas facing security threat. The specialty also deals with surgical management of mass casualties in disasters and the like situations.
Professor Shoaib said the CPSP would train doctors to be prepared for every situation in an effective manner. The specialty consists of two-year course and shall cover rapid response and diseases which are prevalent in far flung and remote areas of the country like atypical infections, he said.
It is important that in the recent past, conflicts like terrorists’ activities have affected a significant proportion of population in Pakistan putting millions of people at stake across a major part of the country. According to many health experts including Professor Shoaib, the existing situation demands the government of investing significantly for improving emergency medical care services.
He added that under the specialty of military medicine, doctors would be trained to deal with trauma and for biological warfare defence. The CPSP would also train doctors to understand and treat abnormal attitude of terrorists. “It was the necessity of the day and the CPSP stands with Pakistan Army to fight with enemies of Pakistan,” said Professor Shoaib.
