Motorcycle-rickshaws, encroachments public nuisance
From Our Correspondent
GUJRANWALA: Haphazard rush of motorcycle rickshaws and encroachments on roads are two big troubles of the pedestrians of Gujranwala.
Illegal motorcycle rickshaws stands are visible with apparent impunity at Sheikhupura Moor, Gondlanwala Ada, Dhulley Chowk, Sheranwala Bagh, Pasrur Road, Chowk Nian, Hafizabad Road and several other places. Such mode of transport is no doubt very affordable for the poor section of society but the trouble of traffic jam is also linked to this ‘facility’. It is not very difficult to become a driver of such mode of transport, so untrained drivers become danger for others especially for pedestrians. According to different assessments, there are over 15,000 rickshaws playing in the city. Most of such rickshaws are without any registration numbers and their drivers are without any document. The relevant authorities seem less concerned to stem this trend of transport. The people urged the higher authorities to take notice of such motorcycle rickshaws and enforce strict rules and regulation in this regard.
When lackluster attitude of traffic wardens regarding managing traffic in the city was mentioned, police spokesman Mirza Umer said the wardens were deputed at various points to streamline the traffic and illegal auto-rickshaw and motorcycle rickshaw stands were also being removed by the traffic police.
