All public and private schools across Sindh will remain closed on Wednesday (today) on account of Iqbal Day.
The announcement came despite the federal government rejecting a proposal for declaring November 9 a public holiday.
Last year, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s federal government had abolished the public holiday. However, it was announced as an official holiday by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government.
The day is celebrated annually on November 9 to pay tribute to Pakistan’s national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who was born on the day in 1877, in Sialkot. A number of programmes, including seminars, are being held to mark the day.
