Dacoit killed in encounter with Burewala police

BUREWALA: A dacoit was killed during an encounter with Gaggo Mandi police at Chowk Shah Junaid near Chak 185/EB on Friday. The police received information that four dacoits, including Ramzan, Rana Ali Hassan of Chak 203/EB and Azhar Farooq Bhatti of Chak 139/EB, were present in the area with an intention of robbery. Following the information, the police raided the area and overpowered one dacoit while three others took shelter in a field and opened fire on them. The police also retaliated. As a result, dacoit Ramzan was killed on the spot while his three accomplices managed to escape. The killed dacoit was wanted by the police in many cases of murder and robbery. The police recovered a motorcycle and illegal arms from the scene. The body of the killed dacoit has been shifted to the Vehari DHQ Hospital for autopsy.

Call to enhance textile items in GSP facility

FAISALABAD: Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) vice-president Ahmad Hassan Friday welcomed the revival of GSP facility by the USA and called for enhancing textile items under the facility. After attending a briefing arranged by the Office of US Trade Representative on Expanding Pakistan’s Exports through GSP programme, he said the USA has allowed duty free access to 3,500 items to American markets.

Ahmad said Pakistan has availed only 1 per cent of this facility whereas Indian utilization is 25 per cent. He said the preferential trade package covers around $200 million exports from Pakistan as against the total exports of $3.603 billion to the USA, which is quite insignificant in terms of value. The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have issued instructions for obtaining retrospective GSP treatment which is an appreciable step taken by the USA government, he maintained.

Religious leaders warn of protest again

LAHORE: Religious groups ended sit-in outside Punjab Assembly after holding emergency negotiations with a team of the Punjab government officials, but warned that they could again take to the streets if its demands were not met.Talking to newsmen on Friday, their leaders said they ended the sit-in after the government assured them of withdrawing cases against the religious leaders.The Punjab government team in the negotiations was led by its spokesman Zaeem Qadri while officials of Home department, DIG and CCPO were also included in it.

Stray twine injures biker in Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA: A motorcyclist was injured after a stray twine fell on him on Sialkot Road in Civil Lines police limits on Friday. According to the police, Umer of Glotian was on his way when twine of a stray kite fell on him. As a result, he was injured. Police have registered a case against an unidentified kite flyer.

Man shot dead on resistance

PAKPATTAN: A man was shot on resistance near Chak Jalal Jamoon on Friday. Police constable Shahzad and his brother Zafar Iqbal were on their way home by a car when two dacoits intercepted their vehicle and looted Rs 75,000 from them. The dacoits shot Zafar Iqbal dead on resistance. Qaboola police have registered a case.

Prof Waheed starts hunger strike for

extension in service of Gen Raheel

ISLAMABAD: Prof Waheed Kamal, Coordinator Gen. Raheel Sharif Lovers, in a bid to get extension in the service of Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, has started a token hunger strike in front of the National Press Club Islamabad.Prof Waheed also demanded that a referendum should be conducted to ascertain the opinion of the nation in connection with the extension in tenure of Gen. Raheel Sharif.

University declines pleas of professor,

assistant professors for extension

SUKKUR: Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical University of Larkana has canceled contracts of one professor and six assistant professors.

The News has learnt that the seven faculty members had joined the Khairpur Medical College on two years contract after getting two years leave from Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College of the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical University of Larkana.

Reports said they had after conclusion of their contract applied for two more years’ extension. However, the syndicate of the university declined their applications and ordered them to join the Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College of Sukkur.

Reports said that the former chief minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, had contacted the vice chancellor of the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical University and the provincial health minister to get the decision reversed, but the authorities refused.
