A Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader was killed and another injured in a gun attack in the wee hours of Wednesday.
JI District Central chief Monim Zafar said the party’s union council mayor Muhammad Arshad, 35, and Gadap Town Secretary Moti-ur-Rehman were on their way to New Karachi from Gulshan-e-Maymar when a car tried to intercept them. When the JI leaders refused to comply, the suspects in the car opened fire on them and wounded them.
Rehman took Arshad to the Aga Khan University Hospital, where the latter succumbed to his injuries. Police said the suspects in the car wanted to rob the JI leaders. Zafar criticised the police for failing to protect the lives and properties of citizens, especially on the outskirts of the city.
JI chief Siraj-ul-Haq led Arshad’s funeral prayer in Gulshan-e-Maymar. The funeral was also attended by senior JI leaders and members as well as hundreds of party activists.
