As per investigators, 45-year-old Mukhtiar, the owner of Kausar Bakery in Paper Market, Kharadar, and an employee, Akhtar, were organising affairs before sales commenced for the day when a group of robbers barged in and held them up at gunpoint.

Officials said Mukhtiar managed to get hold of his weapon and opened fire at the group, injuring one of them. The others, however, retaliated while fleeing and their shots critically injured both Mukhtiar and Akhtar. The robbers managed to take their injured partner along too.

Rescue officials rushed Mukhtiar and Akhtar to the Civil Hospital Karachi, but their injuries – both were shot in the chest – proved too severe and they passed away soon after.

As police were informed of the injured condition of one of the suspects, an alert was put out to hospitals in the city. Soon after the incident, a man was brought to CHK for treatment of bullet injuries and the police arrested him after confirmation.

The suspect was identified as Abdullah Baloch, and investigators said a case had been filed and efforts were underway to track down his partners.

On October 2, two shop owners were killed in separate robberies in the city. The first victim was identified as 40-year-old Abbas who gunned down at his establishment in Ali Muhammad Goth near Taiser Town.

The day’s second killing was reported in Malir, where the 25-year-old owner of a soft drinks depot, Hamza Abbas, was shot dead at his shop. Khokrapar police officials said Hamza was shot by two robbers when he refused to give into their demands for cash. He was critically injured in the shooting and passed away en route to the JPMC.

Body found

The body of 24-year-old Syed Mairaj was found dumped near a school in Landhi No 3.

Police said the victim had been shot multiple times in the chest and an autopsy at the JPMC confirmed this view. Investigators were, however, unclear over the motive of the murder and said it was most likely a kidnapping case.

The victim, it was said, was a resident of Landhi and police officials stated that all possible aspects, including the possibility of Mairaj being intentionally targeted, would be thoroughly probed.
